North Korea Air Force Capability

North Korea's Air Force: Deterrence and Capabilities

North Korea's Game Plan

North Korea's air force is designed to deter an attack from the United States. The country's air force is relatively small, but it is equipped with a variety of weapons, including surface-to-air missiles, anti-ship missiles, and fighter jets. North Korea also has a large number of airfields, which would allow it to launch a significant number of aircraft in an attack.

Capabilities and Limitations of North Korea's Air Force

According to a 2021 report from the US Defense Intelligence Agency, the North Korean air force would be unable to prevail in combat against US forces. The report found that the US has overwhelming advantages in power, technology, and training. North Korea's air force is relying on an aging combat fleet. The KPAAF consists of mainly Cold War-era aircraft, such as the MiG-29 and the Su-25. These aircraft are outmatched by the US Air Force's F-35 and F-22 fighter jets. North Korea's air force also lacks the training and experience necessary to compete with the US Air Force. The KPAAF has not conducted any significant combat operations in decades. In contrast, the US Air Force has extensive experience in combat operations, including the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. North Korea could have the material for more than one hundred. However, North Korea's air force presents no conventional challenge to South Korea's far more capable air force nor the United States Air Force deployed in the region.
